I’d been dreaming all along - the pedal steel and rhapsody bombs
dropped from airplanes in canvassed songs i missed you then
the subtle call of the animals - the ones i never used to watch
sat in circles underneath the bony sky
i was just a little kid - i’m all you never did
i’m the aching in your lungs, after too much living
don’t retreat when you’ve lost - broken bottles and all they cost
you're the openness we lack - we’re just getting sidetracked
don’t get me wrong it’s not my year
the spring hasn’t even come and i’m lost in all my fears
get going you’ll be late, i don’t want to see your face
i’m afraid of what i’ve done, i’m afraid of what i’ve done
I’m wishing i’d before i ain’t young - with only my boots, my trust, my gun
the push and pull of worn out lungs, the overblown hope on my tongue
send that letter in your desk - the one you wrote when i was myself
the west always tempted my soul, driving late in the oxygen snow
tried that traveling heart i constructed
wished away all those mistakes i conducted
and i never quite caught the meaning in what i did
it’s just me out here, trying to forget
